Blanket 20mph zones to be reviewed

by richardbrown on 28 July, 2015

The new Liberal Democrat-Conservative Executive has announced that there will be a review into removing blanket 20mph zones.

Cllr Keith Aspden, Deputy Leader of the Council, announced the review at the first Executive meeting saying that officers should investigating the removal of 20mph signs where appropriate, and in consultation with local communities, and investigate the legal and cost implications.

Cllr Ann Reid, Lib Dem Spokesperson for Transport, who has long called for the blanket policy to be scrapped, said:

“There are areas where 20mph limits are clearly needed, such as outside schools and local shops. However, Labour’s blanket 20mph policy was unpopular with local residents with many strongly objecting to the limits and associated street clutter especially in areas where there were no speeding problems in the first place.

“I am pleased therefore that officers are being requested to produce a report to investigate the removal of 20mph zones where appropriate and in consultation with local residents. This should report include the process, cost and legal considerations”.
