Campaigners have welcomed the “fantastic” news that the future of Yearsley Pool is to be secured as part of a new leisure agreement proposed by council leaders.

A report going to the Liberal Democrat-Conservative Executive next Thursday confirms the join administration’s clear long-term commitment to the future of the pool as part of a new leisure contract which also includes the Community Stadium. The councils leisure contract will run for 13 years which will now include Yearsley pool.

Cllr Keith Aspden, Liberal Democrat Group Leader and Deputy Leader of the Council, commented:

“A key priority for the Liberal Democrat Group as part of the Joint Executive has been to secure the future of Yearsley Pool. I am delighted that we have now been able to do this and have put in place a clear council commitment to Yearsley as part of the leisure contract with GLL.

“The pool is hugely valued by residents and it should never have been threatened with closure by Labour in the first place. Fiona Evans and the Action Group have campaigned tirelessly to save the pool, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with them as the plans move forwards.”
